REU Program
Interdisciplinary Materials Research, Research Experience for Undergraduates
Update (2/15/2024): Yes, we are still accepting applications for our REU program! However, please be sure to get all of your materials submitted as soon as possible, as we are now beginning to review applications. We will continue to review all application materials until all positions have been filled.
We are pleased to report that the REU program in materials at SIUC has been funded by the NSF for another three year cycle, and we are now welcoming applications for the Summer 2024 cycle! Southern Illinois University will sponsor research opportunities for undergraduates in disciplines related to Interdisciplinary Materials Research in Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering during the summer of 2024. The REU Program is principally focused on providing students with the opportunity to perform research at the forefront of materials science and engineering. Potential projects span a broad range of topics under the guidance of faculty from the schools of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics, Engineering, and Microbiology. The available research topics are chosen to complement the research of associated faculty. We will update information as it becomes available.
Housing dates of this year’s program are expected to be: Tuesday, May 28, 2024 to Saturday, July 27, 2024.
In order to be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Those students selected for the program will receive a stipend worth nearly $6,500. The students will also be provided free housing (with their own bedroom) in University Housing. (The interns are expected to pay for their own meals.) Students are also provided with a travel allowance of $800.00, to help defray the cost of traveling to and from SIUC or to travel to a scientific conference. A $1000 research allowance is also provided to support each student's research project.
Apply now! Please click on the "REU APPLICATION" link at the upper-left-hand part of this page or here to begin your application. Review of applications will begin after February 11th 2024.
