REU Program

Interdisciplinary Materials Research, Research Experience for Undergraduates

UPDATE (3/2/2022): Yes, we are still accepting applications for Summer 2022!  The decision process will begin very soon, but we will continue to accept applications until all positions are filled.

We are pleased to report that the REU program in materials at SIUC has been funded by the NSF for another three year cycle, and we are now welcoming applications for the Summer 2022 cycle! Southern Illinois University will sponsor research opportunities for undergraduates in disciplines related to Interdisciplinary Materials Research in Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering during the summer of 2022. The REU Program is principally focused on providing students with the opportunity to perform research at the forefront of materials science and engineering.  Potential projects span a broad range of topics under the guidance of faculty from the schools of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics, Engineering, and Microbiology.  The available research topics are chosen to complement the research of associated faculty. We will update information as it becomes available.

Housing dates of this year’s program are expected to be: Tuesday, May 24, 2022 to Friday, July 22, 2022.

In order to be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  Those students selected for the program will receive a stipend worth nearly $5,400.  The students will also be provided space in a 2-person room in University Housing paid for by the University.  (The interns are expected to pay for their own meals.)  Students are also provided with a travel allowance of $800.00, to help defray the cost of traveling to and from SIUC or to travel to a scientific conference. A $1000 research allowance is also provided to support each student's research project.

SIU Carbondale is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer of individuals with disabilities and protected veterans that strives to enhance its ability to develop a diverse faculty and staff and to increase its potential to serve a diverse student population. All applications are welcomed and encouraged and will receive consideration.
