REU Program
Interdisciplinary Materials Research, Research Experience for Undergraduates
Pending the renewal of our funding, we welcome applications for the Summer 2025 cycle. Southern Illinois University plans to sponsor research opportunities for undergraduates in disciplines related to Interdisciplinary Materials Research in Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering during the summer of 2025. The REU Program is principally focused on providing students with the opportunity to perform research at the forefront of materials science and engineering. Potential projects span a broad range of topics under the guidance of faculty from the schools of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics, Engineering, and Microbiology. The available research topics are chosen to complement the research of associated faculty. We will update information as it becomes available.
Prospective housing dates of this year’s pending program are yet to be determined, but our program usually runs for roughly 9 weeks following the Memorial Day weekend.
In order to be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students selected for the 2025 program would receive a stipend worth $6,500 or more. The students would also be provided free housing in University Housing. (The interns are expected to pay for their own meals.) Students would also provided with a travel allowance of $800.00, to help defray the cost of traveling to and from SIUC or to travel to a scientific conference. A $1000 research allowance would also be provided to support each student's research project.
